Gregory Stanton is a multi-talented lyrics writer and rapper from La Crosse, United States. Commonly known by his moniker "Guess Pre", he is known for his atmospheric hip-hop and rap music. Guess Pre has been in the hip-hop scene for 2 years now and has been dropping new bangers each year. He has started this year with a bang with his latest album "Clarity". The album consists of upbeat hip-hop tracks penned by Guess Pre that talk about his journey and struggles in sobriety. Let's take a deeper dive.
Starting off the album is the track "I'm not Peter Pan, you are". The song is very bass heavy with the sub-basses decorated rhythmically. Guess Pre's verses are adorned with harmony lines that add a melody to his groove.
"Aardvark" is the second track on the album and good lord does it change things up! The song is dark and serious in the beginning, but it gets more mellow down the line with Guess Pre showing us his singing abilities!
Our favourite throughout the album has to be "Night Shift". The intro section of the track is very atmospheric, utilizing synth pads, piano, and a sub-bass along with the melodic voice of Guess Pre set the mood just right!
"WinterRain" is a very Lo-Fi track that goes very smoothly. The track is minimalist and simple, doing a lot without saying much. The track slowly builds its pace with the bass down the line.
Right in the mid-point of the album we are introduced to the title track "Clarity" and boy is it a banger!! The track begins with a sci-fi-like atmospheric music while Neil deGrasse Tyson's Lecture on consciousness is played. But soon, the beat is dropped harder than ever! This song, unfortunately short, is a master-class in musical story-telling!
"High Drama" is a dark, serious, and a slow composition with a heavy bass influence. The verses are accompanied by vocal harmonies blending rap and singing melodies like never before.
Guess Pre talks about heartbreak and loneliness in "Bittersweet". This track focuses more on the singing talent of Guess Pre and gives the rapping a bit of a break. Guess Pre's amazing with vocal harmonies and it shows in this track with how the harmonies caress and add a finesse to each line!
"A Jedi Song" is quite a unique composition from the album. Don't get me wrong, the track is still very much hip-hop but it's hip-hop with classical music elements, using a piano arpeggio and a strings section setting the atmosphere in the background. The Vocal solo in the mid-point of the track gives it an opera-like feel! It's an Ode to the Star Wars franchise loved by Guess Pre.
Guess Pre delves into EDM territory with the final banger of the album - "Early Goodbye". The track starts off with a side-chained bassline and synth waves introducing us to the theme this time. The song takes inspiration from Rave Music with a hip-hop twist, merging the two genres with the genius of Guess Pre.
