Pain is the driving force behind excellent art. For Salt Ashes, her father’s untimely passing acted as the push behind her newest single ‘10 + 2’, which has already taken over hundreds of thousands of hearts.
‘10 + 2’ is a deeply emotional love letter from a daughter to her father; the music video is made up of home videos from Salt Ashes’ childhood containing sweet moments that shes spent in her father’s loving embrace. The video itself is enough to make anyone cry, but add to that raw, vulnerable vocals and piercing lyrics reminiscent of a father’s love, and you have a song you cannot even sit through without absolutely breaking down. Salt Ashes’ voice is genuine and lacks any sort of artificial filter, which makes it all the more hard-hitting. The lyrics are beyond poignant, especially the line, “Pretending to sleep so you would carry me all the way to bed” had me weeping. The serious and painstaking music makes you empathise with a daughter’s lament; it moves you!
The song has moved many on the internet, the comments are full of people who know all too well what the pain of losing a father feels like, for me it just made me appreciate my father all the more, and that is the exact intention of this track, to make you appreciate what you have today before it’s too late!
